In the US we spend on average 24 hours a week online, so it's no surprise we spend ages commenting and sharing on funny photos. Using memes in your marketing will help to reach out and connect with your audience. Over the years memes have evolved from image based content to video content like gifs.
Google defines memes as: “An element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation. "A humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users." Today a meme is a huge part of internet culture, a way for people to express emotion. A meme is an inside joke everyone can join in on, perfect for increasing engagement on social media.
An image is more likely to catch people's attention as they're scrolling through their timeline. If your audience finds the image or video funny they'll start commenting and sharing it with their friends. A great way to increase your reach and following on social media. Memes have a short lifespan, so make sure your brand uses new memes about trending topics, in order to receive more engagement. Use memes that are relevant to the products or service you sell. For example Nickelodeon uses images from their TV shows that younger audiences will be able to relate to. Do not share memes that can be seen as offensive, as you'll risk damaging your company's reputation. Popular themes you can include are quotes or images of characters from TV shows or movies, puns and funny animals. There are plenty of websites with software that allows you to create your own memes or if you have access to it you can use Photoshop.
