Half of all plastic used world wide is created for single use. Encouraging employees to use reusable coffee cup’s can dramatically combat the volume of avoidable waste your workplace produces. Company branded, reusable coffee cups are also a great internal marketing move. A study was recently conducted to assess the impact of using promotional products as internal marketing. It was observed that the frequent use of promotional products not only increase work performance, and a more positive employee attitude. The results also indicate that the use of this type of internal communication can dramatically increase motivation and attitude towards the company, resulting in an increase of sales.
Companies should be supplying their offices with recycling bins, and encouraging their employees to separate it accordingly. If you don’t have recycling bins – appeal directly to management! This will help reduce the amount of waste from your office ending up in landfills, as well as setting a way of life that will hopefully be adopted in employee home life as well.
Or even better, open the blinds up and use natural lighting! If that isn’t an option in your office, motion censored lights are the next best thing. Energy consumption requires the use of fossils fuels, which results in harmful emissions that are detrimental to the atmosphere. Motion-sensor lights reduced the energy consumption. Another added benefit that comes with reducing your energy consumption is the money you can save on power and electricity bills.
Office bins usually consist of 50% documents that were unnecessarily printed. Why not add a footer at the bottom of your emails reminding the receiver to only print if necessary. Instead of relying on the printer, why not opt for a cloud base alternative where you can easily save, share, edit and access documents on Google Drive.
Did you know that the majority of office power is consumed by machines that you presume are off? Before you leave work, unplug your computers, printers and coffee machines. Leaving these on overnight wastes electricity and results in increased power bills. Microwaves alone burn up to 35 kilowatts per hour, despite only being used during the lunch hour period. The rest of that 35 kilowatts is used on merely keeping the electronic buttons on standby mode and illuminating the clock button. So conserve power by switching off, and reminding your fellow colleagues to do the same!
You should encourage your colleagues and workers to be Eco conscious out of office as well. Why not try and start up a car pool or cycling team to get everyone working together to make it a lifestyle change rather than just an office lifestyle change.
