The 57th Super Bowl will take place in Glendale, Arizona, on February 12th. As it does each year, it will determine which team is crowned Champions of the NFL. The Super Bowl is the greatest event on our sporting calendar, and maybe even the world’s calendar. This clash of the titans manages to pick up an increasing number of fans around the globe each year due to worldwide TV coverage and the huge audience that brings. A prime half-time music slot in the stadium presents top-class entertainment alongside the ball game too. The whole event is the main event - a real spectacle which attracts massive US audiences approaching 100 million and is becoming more popular the world over each year.
For those who don’t know much about the Super Bowl (yeah, there must still be a handful of people out there) we’ve put together this quick guide. We won’t go deep into explanations of the skills, plays and intricacies of the game itself, but here are some facts you can impress your friends with – followed by some quality merchandizing for Super Bowl you can use for your business or organization to raise brand awareness around the big game.
Did you know that the NFL doesn’t pay the half-time entertainers? Even mega-musicians like U2, Springsteen, Lady Gaga and Beyonce didn’t receive fees for their stunning performances. However, the NFL does pay the artist expenses and production costs for the usually elaborate slot. It’s an accepted trade-off for the massive exposure they’ll receive. In 2020, after they co-headlined Jennifer Lopez’s Spotify streams more than tripled, and Shakira’s more than doubled. U2’s half time show in 2002 was, typically, used to highlight a serious issue in a moving way. It was the first Super Bowl to take place after the 9/11 attacks and the Irish band paid tribute by projecting the names of everyone who died onto a massive vertical screen behind the stage.
For many years the feature-length 1983 finale to classic war-medic comedy M*A*S*H was the most-watched TV show in American history, with just under 106-million viewers. This was finally surpassed in 2010 by Super Bowl XLIV between New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, which amassed a staggering 106.5-million viewers. Last year’s, between NFC champions Los Angeles Rams and AFC champions Cincinnati Bengals, drew an incredible national audience of 112.3-million, though the most watched was Super Bowl XLIX in 2015 between New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. A record 114.44 million viewers tuned into the game.
Since it began in 1967, the New England Patriots have appeared in the most Super Bowls. They’ve hit a total of 11 (1985, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), and won six of them – which means they’ve lost five, also a record (jointly held with Denver Broncos). The Pittsburgh Steelers are behind the Patriots for appearances, with 8 (including six wins and two losses). Neither of those teams are playing this year, so that will not change.
